B.A. Spanish Language Teaching from the University of Texas

Mrs. Blakely Garcia

¡Hola! This is my 19th year teaching Spanish, and my 7th year as a Horizon Panther. I'm originally from Houston, Texas, and that's where my love for Spanish began. I started taking Spanish as a 9th grader and never looked back. Upon graduating from high school, I spent a month in the north of Spain, in the magical city of Santander. I attended classes at the Universidad de Cantabria each morning and explored in the afternoons. After graduating with a B.A. in Spanish Language Education from the University of Texas, I spent 2 months in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I returned from Argentina and started my first teaching job at a high school in Round Rock, TX, just outside of Austin. Since then, I have taught levels 1-3 to both middle school and high school students.

My husband and I have 3 kids, a freshman in college, an 8th grader and a 4th grader. In my youth, I was on swim team, played basketball, volleyball and softball and loved watching sports with my dad. I still love watching sports, but don't play nearly as much as I once did. When I'm not working on school stuff or spending time with my family, you can find me watching Spanish shows on Netflix.

I always wanted to be a teacher. As a kid, I had a ginormous chalkboard, and I LOVED playing school with all the willing kids on my block. Do you know what an overhead projector is? I had one of those :). Teaching can be challenging, but it is very rewarding too, and that's why I do it. I love the light bulb moments when students get it. For me, effort is everything. Give me your best, ask relevant questions and work hard. It's going to be a great year! I look forward to working hard with you! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with questions, comments or concerns. Email is the best way to reach me.
